I'm new to here and really glad to be a member with all you fine boaters out there.
I have a problem with my steering hook up... I have a 1976 15 ft sea sprite and i put a 1960 40 hp Johnson Sea horse on it that came off an old boat with the cable steering. My boat has a single cable push-pull type system. The connection on the motor has a bracket thats attached to the motor itself for the cable type. I saw the kits on west marine and can do it, but, when i try to test run it by holding the cable in place, the motor does not seem to turn enough either one way or another. Any ideas on how to hook this up to this boat and would the splashwell system solve my problem? I would go back to the cable steering but mine is a run-about with a walk way in the middle and the cable would be right in the way.
Thank you for reading and hope someone can help.

Hate to tell you this, but that's the way it is. That is the reason I try to discourage people from putting push-pull on their older boats.

The only way you can get more steerage is to fabricate some sort of a bracket to get the attachment point closer to the pivot pin (aft). But then you run into interference problems when you try to tilt the motor, which can be dangerous or break parts.

Re: Need help please for steering connection...

Welcome to the iboats.com forum. The experts here, which I am not, can help you solve any problem. Teleflex sells a Steering Connection Kit (SA27198/27199) for J&E 40HP & Below motors for mechanical steering systems. Although their online library does not have any info on it, I scanned and saved the one page Instruction Sheet and will send you a copy. You will be able to see how it is made and installed plus have a list of hardware needed. Please send me a Private Message with your email address and I will reply with the info as an attachment. Good luck!

You can use the old style cable/pulley steering by having both cables run down one side and then have one cable cross the motor and them come back to make it turn.

Thanks for all the info and help, now I know what I can do and have to do. Willyclay, I sent you my email address for those scans. I will also consider running the cable/pulley system down one side if i cannot get this system to work.
Thanks again for the help and info.
This site is great!
