NEED HELP PLEASE

I have a 1963 75HP Johnson Seahorse with electric shift. Having a shifting problem. Operates fine in reverse. Neutral does not work. When shifted into forward it hits hard and the engine dies. Tested wires going into lower unit and voltage is correct. I have taken the prop shaft and gears out. I noticed that the spring on the reverse gear will only move freely in one direction and the forward gear will move in both directions. Is the forward gear spring broke? I did have a major leak and the unit filled with clear water (no oil). I also discovered a bare wire to the electric shift, just above the prop shaft housing. All bearings seem to be ok. Is one of the springs broke and where can i find parts. Please Help!!

From your description of the springs... I'm guessing that is a selectric.. (that and the fact that I have a 63 evinrude here, and it is a selectric.)<br /><br />Anyway, on to your problem, the two springs are part of two electic clutches... and at the base of the spring, where the gear is, is where the cluch faces are.. in my case, the forward gear was considerably chewed away... The answer in my case was to swap them around since reverse is under much less load then forwards.<br /><br />As for the both ways... one way spinning, I found in mine that there were several bits of the clutch face material caught between the spring and the shaft it is surrounding, and that was causiung it to catch in one direction.. sounds like you have a similiar problem..<br /><br />Really strip that thing and clean it throughly.. anything caught in there will cause big probs...<br />check how much material is left of the clutch faces... and if bad, start looking around for outboard wreckers for a replacement gearcase.<br /><br />The selectric was a bad design IMHO, they improved it dramatically later on by changing to hydroelectric.. I got left out on the water several times by my running selectric outboard that wouldn't go into gear...<br /><br />regards<br /><br />Franki
