Re: Need HELP Pleasee in trouble

Well, I guess you're about to learn some about boats, like it or not ;>.... If I were you I would find out what kind of shape the motor's in before I bothered with wiring it or mounting the controls (which is pretty easy provided you have the correct control box, cables, and wiring harness).
First you need to do a compression and spark test on the motor. If you have the right tools it's not too difficult, and you can do this w/o the controls hooked up.
Look for the model & serial number. There should be a tag on the side of the motor bracket. If it's missing, look around on the block, and you may find the numbers stamped on a freeze plug on the top of the motor behind the flywheel. The model number will indicate the year of the motor.
Loosen the drain screw (straight screw, bottom / side / forward) in the lower unit and see what comes out. If water comes out, this will mean trouble.
Even if you have to tow it to a shop and pay a few bucks to have the motor checked out, it will be well worth it. If the motor has good compression, it would be worth fixing up the mag or cleaning out the carbs, but if the powerhead and/or the lower unit is shot, you might be better off looking for another good used motor.
If you can provide some numbers off the motor, I or someone else can probably give you some more specific info, depending on how deep you need or want to get.
