1988 Merc 5.7---Alpha drive

#1- pull drive
#2- take all hoses and wiring and fuel lines off
#3- unbolt motor mount nuts
#4- remove bolts around bell housing-????-do I need to do anything else to the housing ???
#5- remove starter or will it come off with the block??
#6- unbolt fresh water exhast manifolds and push apart

Thanks for any input---Steve

Download this manual and you'll have all the info you ever need.

Here's what I do...

remove drive.
disconnect fuel line, battery cables, wiring harness, trim senders (where they connect to the engine harness).
disconnect water inlet hose from transom housing.
disconnect power steering hoses from cylinder.
disconnect throttle and both shift cables.
loosen exhaust rubbers hose clamps.
remove nuts from front engine mounts.
remove rear engine mount bolts.
lift engine.

Re: Need help pulling motor

You need just the engine to come out.

Leave the bell housing in place.

Why you taking off the manifolds and elbows?

Just loosen the rubber exhaust hoses.

Tie fan belts around the elbows, and the front lifting eye and you will have a 3 point lift to one hook.

Make sure the side motor mount bolts are off.

You can lift it yourself, all you need is a tree and a chain hoist.

Leave the bell housing in place.
I have to disagree with that completely, may be the way it's done for the OMC stringer drives, but not Mercruisers. Just remove the 2 motor mount bolts out of the bellhousing.

Then, on the front mounts, leave the mount on the engine, remove the lag bolts that attach it to the stringers.
These.

Both of these steps will make the installation process a LOT easier. Because you can lift the engine straight up and down.

Probably easier to do it Don s way.

Ether way the drive got to come off.

And you will be able to check the whole engine bay never know what you might find.

Ok guys--thanks for the responses---after working on it today--I can see Don in right--this is a twin engine boat so the best part about putting it back in is I have twin sitting right next to it---Don --the boat is a Regal and they mounted the front mounts on alum angle instead of drilling into the stringers---looks like a straight out pull--the boat is 21 years old so I squirted some oil down the rubber sleeves--they seem flexible enough to pull out of the elbows--seems like I've got everything else disconnected and labeled---and other words of wisdom ????

Pray that the chain don't snap.

:D

Actually Chief brings up a point.... The obvious looking place to attach the chain is the built in "loop" you may have attached on the front of the engine - probably by the thermostat housing. It is not recommended that you use that. Get a 3/8" bolt and washer and bolt the chain to the front and back of the heads if you can get to them. That is the most secure method.

Good point--I went and bought a 3' piece of 5/16 log chain and 2 shackels--there are 2 points on the corners of the engine that are for pulling the engine---if 1 breaks the other should hold---I hope---any other hints for tomarrow---I think it will go OK---thanks Steve

A cheap engine leveler works wonders. I attach a bolt (grade 8) in the front of one head and the back of the other. The chains go to each end of the leveler that allows you to raise or lower the engine angle when un/coupling. Mine costs like $30. Just a thought.

Well--today was the day and all went well---I had everything loose yesterday and in 15 min it was out like a greased pig---or is that lipstick on a pig ?? Sorry--wrong topic--thanks for all your input---Don --unbolting the lag bolts was much easier and I can see upon install that will also work better---thanks for all your help!!! See ya in the spring when I put the new one back in---Steve
