i did not winterize it so the block busted ( i did not notice this until i put it in the water) well i pulled out and ran it in the driveway on the hose for about 30 min with no issues.i put it in the water it ran hot enough to burn up the exhaust bellows( all of them) well i ordered a new motor it's here.i got everything unhooked and or unbolted that i think holds the engine in.well i now have to pull the motor out and put the new one,but first i need to pull the out drive and change the bellows and the shift cable.i know everything i see and read to pull the stern drive off you have to **** the trans into full forward, but mine will not move.cause it melted. what do i do? and any tips on anything i need to do motor/stern drive or anything else i would love to hear it. this is my first time working on a boat.thanks guys.

I sapose you wont be making that mistake again.....it happen though!

With the cable disconected from the shift assembly and try and pull it by hand. The melted portion is just a sleeve around a metal wire so the metal wire should be good but that melted plastic may be jaming it. You will need to replace that!

Well the drive will not remove from the bell houseing unless in foward.

That wire is connected to a lever inside the bell housing that disingages and ingages the drive. You need to get that lever to move into the foward position or it will only allow the drive to move an inch or two, it wont even come off the bolts.

So my thoughts is if you can move it by hand with the cable you can pull on it while some one else pulls the drive back past that lever so it can be removed.

A photo of the melted portion may help with ideas. I have attached photos of the lever I speak of

just cut th eold cable right behind the shift boot and shift manually so the shoes are in a straight line bow -to-stern.

The exhust runs through the same space that the rest of the peices and parts to the drive do.

Have you been able to try any of the suggestions provided?

What about trimming the drive up and trying to turn the shift leg with a pair of pliers or vice grips, like he said it is just the plastic that is jamming it. Oh I just had a thought!

A torch! If heat got the plastic hot enough to jam it, what if you heat it up again and maybe it will goo up enough to move? its worth a try

Well you will need to search, you can try on Iboats store, Ebasicpower.com, Ebay, Amizon...the list goes on. You will notice when shopping that prices may very wildly. When I bought my long block I just rebuilt the price ranged from $1899-$4500.
You can also search it in Google for shopping resaults and will find the best price for you.
