need help troubleshooting ignition

i have an 1986 force 125 hp with the black ignition. i was just changing the spark plugs and realized i lost a cylinder. #3 from the top. i swapped wires on cylinders #2 and #3 and #3 fired and #2 didnt. does that automatically mean that it is the coil or should i troubleshoot further. i have a seloc manual but im having a hard time understanding the troubleshooting guide in it. i dont have a whole lot of money to buy electrical parts that i dont need. i have a voltmeter and the want to fix it just not sure. could walk me through troubleshooting in lamens terms. also the only coil i could find for my motor is 45.00 dollars is that about right for one coil? anyhelp would be greatly appreciated
