I was given a Minn Kota EM42 that attaches directly to the outdrive ventilater plate. It will be used only as a back up motor to get me out of the shipping lane on the Columbia River or back to the dock or shore in case the Volvo Penta on my 16ft boat breaks down. I'm not using a gas outboard because it will be used very little and probably wouldn't be up to the task from non use when I needed it.

The problem is that the Minn Kota trolling motor has no control box or remote but when hooked up to the battery it runs fine. For my purposes and because it will probably need full power to move my boat, a varying speed controller is not important to me.

The question I have is regarding running the power wires from the motor to a switch or relays so that I can switch it "ON FORWARD", "ON REVERSE" and "OFF" at the helm and then wire it back to the to the battery. Once again, this would be at full power.

Can this be Done? If so, an idea of how to do this with wire, switches and relays would be appreciated. Also, what size wire should I use?

Here ya go for a start. https://www.trollingmotorparts.com/1996-97Diagrams/EM424896.htm

I have a circuit diagram that will work. All I need is a way to get it to you. You need a three position center off switch and a couple of relays capable of handling 40 amps or so. They with need to have both normally open and normally closed contacts. Wiring is too complicated to describe here but simple once you see it.

After getting some info on how to do this from the local shops, I decided it would be a heck of a lot easier to just extend the hot motor wire with 6 gauge wire, hook it to a 50A on off switch and run it without reverse. I'm using it as an emergency motor not a trolling motor so that should do it. Thanks for getting back to me.
