Need help with 1.75hp Gamefisher

I recently fixed an '89 Gamefisher. In doing so I loosened the coil for the pull start. The cord then became tangled on my second voyage. I now completely let it untangle and figure if I can just get it back together, it'll work. Does anyone know how to get the coil tight enough and keep it tight while putting the housing together? I had to take this apart as the nut on the end of the crank shaft was loose. Is there a known trick? do I take it to Sears? Any help would be great. Thanks folks.

Not exactly sure if I can fix your problem, but here is a link with an exploded view of a typical Gamefisher (a.k.a. Tanaka) outboard. I have a 3.0 hp and have always been able to get my pull line to recoil by removing the pull start from the top of the motor, then reinstalling it. good luck.

Speaking generically;
You have to pretension the recoil spring before attaching the rope.
You may be able to use a C clamp to hold the tension while you attach the rope.
Once attached hold pulley while you carefully release the clamp then let the rope wind up.

I've had to do that many times when the tip of the recoil spring breaks off, and it can be a real pain in the butt job. But it can be done and after you screw with it a while, you can make it work. You have to wind up the spring to pre-load it and then get it into that aluminum body. Just take your time and be patient. I did it once in the pouring rain on the Suwannee River in Florida. Good Luck!
