Evinrude 90 v4. I just changed the water pump and put the lower end back in. the problem is that it seems to be in drive when it should be in neutral and its in neutral when it should be in reverse. when i put the shift rod back on, it connects from the starboard side via a small pin that is moved in and out via the shift linkage. so if the throttle is in the neutral position, the shift rod would have to be in neutral to line up for the pin to go through, it seems that you cant screw it up but apparantly i did.

any help would be great, here is a pic from the starboard side.

Did you turn the shift rod when you had the lower unit out?it sounds like the shift rod height is out of spec , If you turned it in or out when you had the lower unit off that will do it. I believe its suppose to be a height of 21.94 inches to the center of the hole in the shift rod to the top of the lower unit.

The measurement from the top surface of the lower unit to the center of the shift rod hole (in neutral) is critical. I suspect that you turned the shift rod out of adjustment when the lower unit was off. If so, the adjustment follows:

1986 - 90 thru 110hp = (L) 21-27/32" - - (XL)26-27/32" plus/minus 1/32". Have shift rod in neutral

You measure from the top flat machined surface of the gearcase to the center of the hole in the shift rod connector.

If the engine's a 20" shaft, there's no way you're get anywhere near the other measurement.
