Need help with 1987 Mercury 50HP

1987 Mercury 3 Cyl. 50hp. How do I tell if the motor is charging the battery? Also if its not where should i begin to start looking.

Hook up a voltmeter to the engines start battery while it is idling. Should show 13 plus volts,fast idle should get it close to 14v. If there is no change in voltage then I would look first at the rectifier.There are specific checks to make sure the stator is putting out ac current to the rectifier,but see if your charging first.

remove the big plastic cover on yhe right side of the engine.the reg.rectifer is located on the bottom right i believe...if its burnt and melted thats where you should start...hope it helps..
