Need Help with 1989 Evinrude 60????

I have a 1989 Evinrude 60 VRO 2 Stroke 3 Cylinder that runs great. It was rebuilt 3 years ago and has less then 10 hours and is still in the break in period. I am running the VRO and oil in the gas tank for the break in period. The warning horn in the throttle shifter is now going off at mid to full throttle. It is an intermitted horn sound that gets faster the faster you go and slower the slower you go. If I go back to neutral and just idle it stops, then I can go mid to full throttle for about 5 minutes and then it does it again. It had a new water pump but not a new thermostat when rebuilt becuase the thermostat was good. I can put my hand on the thermostat housing and it is hot but not hot enough to where I can not keep my hand on it. Any ideas on what could cause this and how to fix the problem? Try disconnecting the oil reservoir sending wires and see if the alarm quits.Also insure that the reservoir is not low on oil.<br /><br />Otherwise,I'd hurry and finish this break-in period and get the engine on its recommended mix ratio as soon as possible.Three years is a long time to milk a break-in on double oil.Which brings another thought to mind.Are you running fresh gas and TCW3 oil in the fuel tank since you began this break-in?

Yes, always fresh gas and tcw3 oil. The oil reservoir is full, which wires do I disconnect? Thanks

Trace the two wires from the reservoir to their connectors under the engine cover.Should be on the port side near the exhaust cover.

So if I unplug them and the warning horn stops what does that mean?

Sending unit in tank is problematic if disconnecting them ceases the alarm.Other items that trigger the alarm are, 1-rapid short tones denotes a no oil alarm from the vro , 2- one short tone every 20 or so seconds is low oil alarm from reservoir,3- continual tone is engine overheat from the temp sensor located near the T/stat housing.<br /><br />It's possible that the horn itself is the culprit and going to ground ,but eliminate the signal wires first.

I unplugged the wire from the temp sensor and it did not stop, then I unplugged the wire from the oil reservoir and that did not stop the warning horn either. Then when I shut of the engine the warning horn continually sounded off, no intermitted beats, just continued to sound off until I disconected the battery cable. Do you have any other idea as to what it could be? Thanks

It would sound like the horn is getting power with the key "OFF"....is that correct? And the horn is going to ground either in the control box or somewhere in the harnes going back to the engine......did you try to disconnect the alarm plug from the VRO pump?

Yes, as soon as I hook the batteries up the alarm does one beat to verify that it is working. It is the new type of warning horn that I replaced 2 years ago. Where is the alarm plug on the VRO?

Trace the wire harness from the vro pump to an amphenol connector in the engine compartment.Should be on the port side.Unplug it and see if the alarm quits.If not ,follow OBJs lead.
