need help with 25hp mercury

i have a 2 stroke 25hp mercury,, started after 4-5 pulls,, idled rough at first then settled down after i did the 2 step choke. went to forward it died,, i did same method again and it did open up after i went slow for a bit sounded good and went faster than i thought,, ok,, we stop and fish,, same thing to restart,, it just did the same as above,, but died more often,, it died after i let it idle for awhile and alot when i went to forward,but it did take off a few time at slow speed, can any point me to where i should start to find the problem? it a 1986 engine.

The idle mixture sounds lean it could just be dirty and need cleaned but first open the idle screw about 1/4 turn counterclockwise and see if that helps.

thank you very much laddie,, ill try that first thing in the morning, ,, there is another thing i notice while inspecting,, and that is below the bottom spark plug, looks like a seal might be there, and there is a little bit of gas/oil mixture there,, is this a bad seal or normal?

No, a fuel puddle in the housing is not normal use the primer bulb on the host to pressurize the system and check to see where the fuel is coming from.
