Hello, I need some help. I have a 1981 mercruiser 470 and I finally thought I had her fixed. Got the reverse lock valve fixed, the linkage adjusted and the timing adjusted. So I took it today on the water and she fired right up backed it off the trailer and took off ran it for 20 mins and she ran like a top. I got up to about 190 degrees. Turned her off and she would not fire back up until it cooled down to 150 degrees. It did this every time once it cooled off would start right up until the last time I shut her off. I let it cool like I had been all day but when I tried to start it the crank would not turn over. I tried to do it with a screwdriver and it would barly turn I got it to turn finally and it soundlike compression being released eventually would turn alright. Well I turned the key and it fired up er a few cranks but while it was running I noticed oil spitting out the hose going to the carb from the valve cover I guess it is. Anybody know what may be wrong why it will only start cool? Every motor I have ever seen usually starts better warm. What would be the reason for the oil coming out of that hose and the crank sticking like that? When I get it started it runs great? Make no since to me. Thanks

You need to do a compression test. The oil coming from the hose is blow-by from possible bad rings or running hot.How old is the impeller? How old is the riser?
Sounds like it's running a little hot.Maybe not cooling because of the riser/impeller.
Sometimes that motor won't restart unless you open the throttle all the way.
The turning over slowly might be water in the cylinder(again the riser).
When you do comp test check plugs for rust. Jerry

Ok did a compression test and got 1st 145, 2nd 145, 3rd 90, and 4th 147. So what does that mean? Ohh yeah there was not any rust on the plugs and they where dry.

90 psi is more than 15% off the others. Try putting a little bit of oil down the spark plug hole and retesting. If it comes up you have a busted or stuck ring. If not, you have a problem with the head. If it does come up you can always try pouring some seafoam into the cylinder with the hope of a stuck ring which might possibly clear up.

How old is the riser? I bet your problem is a bad riser possibly a bad manifold.Low comp #3 usually means the riser/manifold went bad letting water thru the valves.Put Marvel Mystery Oil in the low cylinder and let it set for 48hrs.Remove the riser and inspect. If you remove it as a unit then you can flow test with a hose.
When you have low comp on rings it pushes air into the crankcase making the air hose blow oil.Jerry

How much mystery oil should I pour in? I don't know how old the riser is it has been on there since I have had it but that hasn't been very long for all I know its the original.

Thats not what I wanted to hear. I was hoping that mystery oil was a cure all. Where exactly is the riser located and how do I take it off as a unit? I don't know much engines and don't have the money to take it anywhere to have someone fix it. Thanks everyone for your replies.

Check the riser, throw some "snake" oil in the #3cyl and just run the thing it will either get worse and your need a rebuild or it will get better.
