I posted a similiar post last year but after the first outing this year the problem has really gotten worse.
I can be on the water 2 days of hard boating(stop and go fishing) and never have a problem. Then on the 3rd day I may be hooking it across the lake and the boat will just die (almost as if you pulled the kill switch). Up untill last weekend you could always get it to restart after wiggling the shifter, killswitch, etc. After it would restart it may go another 2 days before the problem comes back. I have not been able to narrow the problem down to just one thing. Last weekend it died and would not restart. No fire at all, I trolled to the boat ramp(lucky I was heading in anyhow). Got the boat home and took apart the shifter couldnt find anything wrong so I put it back together. Hooked the muffs up and it busted right off. My dilemma is it wont stay broke so I cant figure out what is wrong, the other problem is I dont want to get across the lake with the kids and it die for good.
Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Does it crank and not start? Sounds like a power pack slowly going bad.

Yes sir, it will crank but not start. The whole time it is doing this I am messing with everything (as you may imagine) I thought I had it narrowed down to the shifter or the kill switch but nothing helped the other day. It just would not start.
Does the power pack have to get hot before it acts up? The reason why I am asking is it has died before just after pulling it off the trailer. Other times you can drive it for a week before it dies.

Theres a couple of directions going on here. When the motor quits and you try to restart it -- what happens? Either the motor turns over (starter & flywheel moving) when you turn the key to the "Start" position or you turn the key to the "Start" position and nothing happens.

If theres a problem with the neutral safty switch in the control box the motor would not turn over. IE -- the starter does not move.

If theres a problem with the kill switch the motor would turn over but there would be no spark.

Since you took apart the shifter we assume that nothing happened when you turn the key to the "Start" position and you were checking the neutral safty switch.

However, the neutral safty switch would not cause the motor to die while its running.

When the engine dies the motor does in fact turn over but will not start. It takes a bit of cranking over before it bust off. I took apart the shifter only because it seemed that while I was trying to restart after it died by moving the shifter back and forth and joggling the kill switch it would start right up. I am thinking now that messing with the shifter and getting it to start up was only a coincidence because I found nothing wrong with the shifter. The last time it died while I was on my way to the boat ramp I could not get it to start up(cranked over but would not start) I loaded it up on the trailer and drove home. By the time I got hom (2hour trip) it started right up.
A local Evinrude dealer said that it sounded like a power pack going bad but said that there was no way to be sure with it running. I hate to spend the time and money to repair something that may not fix the problem. If I can get a few more opinions that think it is the power pack then I guess it that will be my next step.

Unfortunately you are absolutely correct -- we cant figure it out until it stays broke. Heres something to try the next time -- when it quits disconnect the black wires with the yellow tracer at the powerpack. This will eliminate the kill circuit. You will still be able to attempt to start the motor as usual but if/when it starts you will not be able to shut it off. Youll have to flood it with the primer.

If that works then the problem is in that circuit. The key switch, kill switch or wiring. It has nothing to do with the shifter or neutral safty switch.

The connectors for those wires are at the powerpack. It would be a good idea to locate them so its easier when youre out on the water. There will be 3. 1 from the pack to the harness. 1 from the pack to the shift interrupter switch. And one from the switch to the pack.

Dhadley, do you feel the same as Walker above that it is a good possibility that it is the Powerpack also?
I am going to try out what you suggested but I also do not want to get stranded on the water with the family in the boat.
