Need Help with a VRO problem

I am having a problem with my VRO, but I do not know if it is a false signal or not. <br /><br />Engine: 250HP Johnson Ocean pro (yr 2000)<br />Symptoms: After 3 minutes of idle the "No Oil" light comes on and buzzer sounds for 10 seconds. This is very consistant..3min/10sec. I have verified that oil is getting to the VRO and when I idle the engine and idle there is smoke continuing to come out of exhaust. So it appears to be getting oil. Any ideas ? is their any significance to the consistant timing of 3min until buzzer sounds/light comes on.. and buzzer only on for 10 sec ? Thanks

Most likely there is a malfunction in the NO OIL alarm circuitry in the module at the back of the "VRO". Your 2000 motor uses the repairable pump that can be rebuilt if needed.<br /><br />Have a trained tech run the pump diagnostics and replace the alarm module if that is what is needed. Everything needed is covered in the factory service manual.

OK.. Thanks.. so far the mechanics that I have spoken with told me it was not repairable. Was this something new in 2000 ? also, does this pattern of 3min to trigger and buzzer on for 10sec sound a typical symptom for a bad circuit ? Thanks

The "VRO" pump has been repairable since it was redesigned in 1998. You ought to find mechanics who are factory trained recently and who know that the pumps are fixable.<br /><br />The proper troubleshooting tecniques have to be performed to find out if the problem is a bad circuit or if there is an oil supply problem or air leak. Once again, refer to the factory service manual.

Just a thought - if you have an oily exhaust, that indicates that the vro is pumping oil - maybe even too much oil. One reason for a vro to pump too much oil is an air leak in the fuel line. The gas gets aerated, and the volume of gas is therefore less than normal, but the vro continues to pump the same amount of oil through. Hence too much oil in the gas. Might be worth a check.
