I have a few things I need help with here all involving electronics/wiring...I'll Post pics...have a 1990 bayliner capri...I have owned boat for a year.

1)I am looking to maybe install a speedometer I need to know what I should look for, the hole I have on dash is about 4 inches. Should I buy and install one or use GPS which i Already have? Only problm is that if I use GPS it will only work for short time until it will loose a charge. Speedometers on Ebay cost $15-40

2)My Tachometer does not work, when I bought my boat it was not hooked up...How do I connect to see if it works? No idea where to start...no wires are connected

3) I have 7 wires underneath steering wheel that are not connected to anything. They are a light purple, thick black tube(I think for speedometer, water leaks out of it), dark gray, blue w/ white stripe, green, light grey, and Red.

4)There is a tiny black box with an orange wire connected to it...looks like some other wire sould connect to it any ideas?

5) I have a missing fuse on fuse block where a green wire is connected...I followed it and it went to horn button, what size fuse do I need?

My fuel meter is only guage connected and it works. Im looking to install maybe speedometer? and connect tachometer which is not connected. Install missing Fuse.

Radio dosent work(Use to work), No Speedometer, No Tachometer, White Light in back of boat not work, CB Radio was hooked up but was unhooked, unsure if compass works...Give you guys some ideas to what those loose wires might be...

What is that black box w/ one orange wire? and loose purple wire?

Boating Industry of America Wire Colors

Here are the standard wire colors used in the boating industry since the late 70s. When re-powering a boat with a newer motor this is a handy reference. Most boats use these standards but always double check in case changes have been made!

BIA Wire Color--------------------Where it is used

Black---------------------------------All Grounds

Black with Yellow stripe---------Magneto/short to Kill

Gray----------------------------------Tachometer signal

Yellow with Black stripe---------Choke

Red----------------------------------Unprotected(12V+)from battery

Red with Purple stripe-----------Protected(+12V)from battery

Purple-----------------------------(+12V)from ignition switch

Tan------------------------------Overheat sensor to warning horn

Pink-------------------------------Sending unit to fuel gauge
--
Yellow with Red stripe----Ignition switch to starter solenoid

Yellow-----------------------------charging stator to rectifier

Lt.Blue with White stripe--------Trim up

Green with White stripe-----------Trim down

Some more standard wire colors used on many inboard boats, always double check though, as some vary or may have been changed along the way!
Some standard colors for boats since 1980 are as follows:
? heavy red 10 guage (main battery)
? heavy black (main ground)
? purple (ignition)
? yellow (starter solonoid)
? grey (tachometer)
? brown (temperature)
? blue (oil pressure)
? brown with stripe (alarm)
Accesories
? pink (fuel sending unit)
? yellow (blower)
? brown (bilge pump)
? grey (navigation lights)
? heavy green (bonding wire)
? red (misc electrical add-ons , vhf , depth finder, stereo, radar, power supplies)

And the ABYC wiring code, Section E-9.21 DC GROUNDING AND BONDING Table XI and XII

TABLE XI - WIRING COLOR CODE

Color Use
Green, or green w/yellow stripe(s) DC grounding conductors
Black, or yellow DC negative conductors
Red DC positive conductors

TABLE XII - ENGINE AND ACCESSORY WIRING COLOR CODE

COLOR ITEM USE

Yellow w/red stripe (YR)

Starting switch to solenoid

Brown/yellow stripe (BY) or
Yellow (Y) - see note
Bilge blowers
Fuse or switch to blowers

Dark gray (Gy)

Terminal/alternator
Auxiliary terminal to light to regulator
Fuse or switch to pumps

Orange (O)
Accessory feed
Ammeter to alternator or generator output and accessory fuses or switches.
Distribution panel to accessory switch

Purple (Pu)
Ignition
ignition switch to coil and electrical instruments.
Instrument feed Distribution panel to electric instruments

Dark blue
Cabin and instrument lights
Fuse or switch to lights

Light blue (Lt Bl)
Oil pressure
Oil pressure sender to gauge

Tan
Water temperature

Re: Need help with basic wiring 1990 bayliner

Off the top of my head, I can tell what a few of those are.
Black tube with water coming out: speedometer
Purple wire: tachometer signal or ignition 12V+ (if it attaches to ignition switch)
Black box with orange wire: overheating alarm
Red: 12V+ from battery
Green: horn, use 10A fuse
Gray: navigation lights

Tachometer will require 12V+ and 12V-, in addition to the signal from the motor.

Why not rig up a 12V accessory outlet so you can use the charger for the GPS?

Re: Need help with basic wiring 1990 bayliner

1) So When connecting the Tachometer I need 12v+ and 12v- which wires woiud those be? Red for 12v+ and black for 12v-? which would be signal from motor?

2) Are you sure gray wire would be navigation lights? The lights on front of my boat work...The Green/Red ones do work but the one in back with white light does not what would I connect that to?

3) Is the overheating alarm completely hooked up with only orange wire or will I need to connect another wire and how exactly does it alarm? shut off or some sort of noise?

4) Is the Accy button on dash mean accessory? Is that what I would use to hook up charger for GPS? and what is the part called that I would need to buy?

Thanks for the help

Re: Need help with basic wiring 1990 bayliner

1. Yes, generally red for 12V+ and black for 12V-, but verify with a test light, or better yet, a digital multimeter. Bayliner (or maybe outboard makers)uses purple for the tach signal from the motor with outboards.

2. Since the nav lights work, clearly the gray wire is for something else. You'll have to trace the wire.

3. The overheat alarm also requires 12V+; the sensor grounds to the motor when the temp of the sensor reaches a critical point.

4. Yes, that's the accessory switch. I was referring to the installation of a standard 12V accessory outlet. This is, of course, assuming you have a charger for your GPS that plugs into such an outlet (like the cigarette lighter in a car).

Re: Need help with basic wiring 1990 bayliner

I bought that exact model from radioshack today(12vdc vehicle charer) and I was trying to figure out how to install. There is a red 12v+ wire and black ground wire coming from it and what I did was plug 12v+ into empty slot in fuse block with a 10A fuse connected and it did not work. I dont think I have any available 12v+ wire so what should i do to connect? I am not sure how to connect to the accy button so it would power on when I cliked on the button but an always on connection would also work for me

I also found that one of the red loose wires I had was actually a purple wire changed into red, I tried plugging 12v+ from vehicle charger to them but no power.

No such thing as 12V- on a boat. Its called ground.

Re: Need help with basic wiring 1990 bayliner

Is there one empty terminal on the ACC switch and a wire (probably red) on the other running to the fuse block (thats' the way it's supposed to be)? If so, the red wire from the accessory outlet attaches to the empty terminal. The black wire attaches to the negative (aka "ground") bus. Look for a number of black wires attached to a terminal block; one of those wires, larger than the rest, runs to the negative battery terminal.

No such thing as 12V- on a boat. Its called ground.
The negative leads on my boat all go to the negative battery terminal eventually! No chassis ground in sight.:)
