Ok I am a complete idiot when it comes to boats. Just got one 2 weeks ago and now I just got a free 6hp Evinrude Fisherman motor. I cannot find a model number on this motor to save my life. I do have a serial number for it: 6602E-E14164.

Next issue being that when I pull the pull cord the motor does not turn whatsoever. Is there some type of lock on the motor that locks the upper half? I see that there is a lever on the side that has 3 different positions to it. When it is switched to center position the prop will free spin when turned by hand but when in the other 2 positions it seems to lock the prop. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

hi.
1.take of the engin cover, at the back there is a latch holding the cover, so unlatch the cover
2.unscrew the engins plugs, and take them out
3. grab by hands the flywheel and turnand you will see if you move fllewheel or its stack.
if its stack then you engin is ready for big maintenence
if you can move freely this fllywheel then check the spark on plags, conect the fuel hose, prime the bulb(tank vent should be open), pull out the choke and try to start engin by pull starter

Sounds like you have major problems.....the middle is the neutral position, where you start the motor, but it should turn even if in gear. There is no lock I know of, engine is most likely seized up. Do as previous poster suggested, remove plugs and spin flywheel by hand(if possible). If it does not budge look at the starter and see if it or anything else is against flywheel. You can spray some oil or wd40 into the cylinders to see if maybe it is just seized due to non use, and see if it breaks loose. Might even remove the head and see if cylinders are damaged.

I already tried the spark plug removal trick and tried to spin it by hand but still no flywheel movement. I will try spraying WD40 into the cylinders and letting sit overnight to see if it helps.

I didn't get a tank or prime bulb with the motor. The guy I got it from said it came with the boat he just purchased and wasn't sure what was wrong with it and I don't think the seller even told him what was wrong with it. Is it worth putting money into or just scrap it?

This is not a good motor for you.

I probably agree.

However, there is a SLIGHT chance that gearcase is whats stuck, not the powerhead. Probably not considering the prop spins.

The motor isnt worthless!
The shift handle (if not broken) will bring you $30-50 on ebay.
And I Want its driveshaft & prop :)

there there is other parts that could bring you some money.
the gears and housing, tiller handle, carb, fuel connector, fuel pump, latch handle, hood, etc etc.
And parting it out will help us others keep our engines going.

Option 2 is to buy a used powerhead on ebay and bolt it on. (the run about $50)

here is the one I just bought for my Green motor project:

I wouldn't mind parting it out I just don't know all the parts. The handle seems to be in good condition, it rotates with no problem and it's still attached to the motor. Not sure what breaks on them. As far as the prop goes it's chipped, almost looks like the guy ran it into some rocks. I am going to have a guy at work check it out tomorrow before I start parting it out.

I will try to post pictures of the motor tomorrow if he declares it as DOA or I will post them when he returns it if he takes it to try and fix it.

I have had success pulling the head off after soaking, and smacking the stuck piston with a rubber mallet.

Yea a guy at work pulled the lower half off to check the water pump to make sure it was working but unfortunately you know it wouldn't be that easy of a problem. We then started pulling the head and ended up snapping a bolt on it but lucky enough that it is above the block so should be able to extract it with no problems. The pistons seem to be in good condition so he is thinking that possibly the crank bearings are froze.

Does anyone know where I can pick up gaskets, water pump, thermostat and other odds and ends for this motor? Now that I have help I think I am going to rebuild the motor.
