I am helping my father in law with this boat that is going to be given to my girl. And I have no idea of what I'm dealing with, he don't know much about it either.

My first question is what year is my motor?

My second is why is the throttle making a loud buzzing sound, like a warning horn

My last question is what manual will help me fix and under stand this motor

The only numbers I can find are J50BELCIC & J5461252
I tryed to use the serial number year look up charts on the manual page but the closest one is a 50BELCI and it said it was a 81

Oh and I was wandering if there is any way to update the throttle controls to somthing newer? The controller says evinrude power pilot it has a lever next to the throttle to speed up the motor & you have to push in the key to chock the motor

I will post the pics later after I can get them to load to this page

The identification plate on the motor mount should also list a model number as well as serial number. Plug the model number into google and you should find out what you have.

Thanks ! I had tryed that the first time and got nothing. But this time it came up with 1981 motor!
so can I upgrade the throttle controls? And why is the throttle making that loud noise?
Would a good manual tell me every thing I could need to know?

Find you a OEM REPAIR Manual

Don't get the aftermarket manuals like seloc.

An actual repair service manual will tell you 99% of everything you need to know and the other 1% from here for tips and tricks.

That buzzing is just the warning system telling you the engine is about to melt a piston.

Get the manual and give it a good read.

Re: Need help with finding the year and a manual

Well it sounds like you need to first off, familiarize yourself with outboard motors.

Being that you already deciphered that your motor is an 81, your first question is already answered.

If you are thinking of replacing the "throttle" which in this case is often referred to as a control box, it should run you a few hundred bucks.

What is the reason that you want to replace it? If it's because it's making noise.....well then it's doing it's job. If updating to a newer style box is the only reason, then that is your choice, but expect to shell out more than a few hundred clams then. They ran that style box for many years for a reason....because it worked well.

Sounds like you have yourself an overheat problem, do you have water coming out of the tell-tale hole, did you run the motor in the water or use a set of water muffs at the very least?

My best suggestion is to read the FAQ's section on this forum as you will find alot of useful information for a first time boater, it will help you answer alot of your own questions and leave you better equipped to get answers to tougher questions you may have in the future.

thanks a lot for all the help! i will read all of the pages tonight after work and order a oem manual.:D

well i guess if the control box is a good one than ill leve it alone and consintrat on figuring out if my motors going to melt a piston:(

oh one other thing my father in law swers its a 4 stroke motor and uses 4 stroke marien oil to mix with the gas. i told him i think its a 2 stroke. could this be bad for the motor? we mix it at 50:1 or 2.5 ounses per gallon.

p. s. sorry for the spelling

Use outboard oil specified for TCW-3. Nothing else
