Need help with gas hose connector

Hi folks,

New to the boating world. Picked up a 14' Arkansas Traveler Comet of 1969 vintage with a 1969 Evinrude Big Twin 40 hp. Hooked to the transom.

Went out today to buy a gas tank and hose. When i got home, was surprised to find out that the Evinrude connector would not fit. As you can see in the pictures below, the throttle cable hookup is in the way and does not allow me to insert the hose connector to the engine.

Here's my question: are there different types of Evinrude connectors? Is this model specific to the engine? Should i just grind the connector (plastic) down until it fits? Is there an "extension" that would solve this problem?

Kinda confused right now...

Any help, much appreciated...

It looks as if you could pivot it upwards and it might work.

No, unfortunately, i can't pivot it upwards, i tried it but that does not work. Maybe shimming the connector out from the engine? Mostly wondering if there are different types of Evinrude connectors...before i start shimming and carving and buffing...somehow i'm sure that's not right...

I had a similar situation with mine, I picked up a brand new connector, and when I tried to plug it in, it would not fit. I had to try to force it, and once I got it on gas leaked everywhere. I bought another one, and same situation. Then I realized that I was buying the wrong one. I didnt pay attention to the packaging. When I got the right one it fit correctly and worked perfectly.

Hmmm....a little curious. It IS an Evinrude connector hose with an Evinrude connector....are there different Evinrude connectors?

That isn't a genuine Evinrude/BRP OEM part is it? "Seachoice" is a new one on me. Probably an aftermarket part that doesn't fit as intended.

it says evinrude, but from the earlier pics, that female end is not like the omc ends on my tanks. just had a look at a yamaha end, and its still different from what you have??

Are you sure you cannot adjust the connection on the motor pan? I'm sure it's connected onto the pan with a screw that you can loosen. While the connector is an aftermarket connector, the pins seem to fit properly based on the photos.

I did have a look at it, there is a bolt behind the connector that I guess I could loosen and "shim out". It is pretty solidly bolted in there. Looks like i might have to 1) shim the engine connection and 2) grind the hose connector tabs, after all...

Thanx all for the great input! You guys are great!

You've got the wrong connector. Get a genuine BRP one and you'll be okay.

Re: Need help with gas hose connector

its pointless to modify such a cheap part and risk a fuel/air leak that could damage your engine or worse!!! as boobie said, get the right part and the job is easy.

Re: Need help with gas hose connector

If you don't want to go through the trouble, it might be best to just get a new connector. Here's a link from iboats made by moeller. You can see that the connector is different in that it is not as thick nor does it have that "grip tab" on the bottom.

But if you look at all the other aftermarket assemblies for omc/johnson/evinrude, they seem to have that "grip tab" on the connector.

Re: Need help with gas hose connector

You guys were right! It was a wrong/wrongly designed connector! Since the BRP/Evinrude dealer is about 40 minutes out of town, I just picked up a new **correct** connector from Moeller at less than 10 bucks and slipped that one in (cheaper than the gas to get the OEM). Works great now. Fired off an e-mail to the company to let them know how I felt about the whole thing and linked them to here so that they know that people are watching!

Thanx for all the great help guys!
