1rich, I drew a schematic for my '62 28hp. It should be really similair to what you've got. Would you like it?

What wires have you got now? Can you provide pics? What electric equiptment do you have on it besides the starter? A generator or electric choke solenoid? How about the starter solenoid?

Sorry for all the questions!

PS - those engines are very reliable once set up properly. As an added bonus, they can be extremely cheap and easy to repair if something does go wrong. You only need some basic tools.

Go to the Engine FAQ section and check out the starter circuit troubleshooting in "Outboard wont start", Rich.

I will move this to Johnson Troubles.

Good luck. :)

Ok, I think I get the picture now. There's two heavy wires and two lighter guage wires right? Would the two lighter wires happen to be black and red?
On the bottom of the carburetor, is there a large round solenoid strapped to the bottom of it (with a red wire attached?)

I'll send the schematic in the morning. I'll edit out all the generator stuff since it makes it very confusing.

Oh, one more question - are you reasonablly sure that the starter solenoid you have is an outboard one and not a car one?

Yeah, that's probably the problem. The car ones are wired different inside than the outboard ones. I know Iboats sells the outboard ones pretty cheap. 18-5808 from NAPA out of their marine catalog will work fine too (~$20).

There's another good reason not to use the car one, and that is it won't make your boat explode if it fills with gasoline fumes.

Anyway, once you get the right solenoid, you connect the black wire to one of the small terminals on the solenoid. You connect the large red cable going to the starter to a large post on the solenoid, and the large black cable to - on the battery. Then, using another large cable (#4), connect the other large terminal on the solenoid to + on the battery.
Now, if you touch a wire between + on the battery and the other small terminal on the battery the outboard will crank. If you touch the small red wire to + on the battery, the choke should close. Naturally, in the boat you'll have these connected via pushbutton switches or an keyed ignition switch.

I'll re-send the schematic as a JPEG - anything should be able to open that.
