so I recenctly picked up a wicked cheap project.. just because i needed the motor but when i bought the boat i was told it needed a fuel pump because it was cracked. now finding the outside housing is easer said than done (any ideas were to find would be great). i hooked up carbs directly to fuel tanks and pumped with the bulb and the motor runs like a dream except.... there is always a except... it will not shif into reverse and i have always worked on rudes so i have now clue on mercs and ideas to check would be great. Also the reverse lock sees to just be rusted all to hell so i need to replace the bar and locks but is this motor have auto lock or what all other moters i have had it lock when i put the motor in the water and you would have to manualy unlock them to raise the motor by hand. I noticed a tube going from the locks to the lower end and have no clue on what that is for(some insight would be great) and how do u remove the old locks and bar. So this is my laundy list that i need help with and if it wern't for this forum outboard maintence would be impossible lol THANKS JOSH also the serial number begins with 47

Josh;

That s/n comes up as:

85 850 4-cyl 4590512 4831998 1977 USA

From here:

http://www.marinshopen.se/Motorer/O...cury2taktR66cyl80150hp/tabid/489/Default.aspx

Parts listing:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/mercury-outboard/475.cfm

Service Manual P/N: 90-86134--4

Here too is a condensed version of the Clymer manual. Let the page load for several seconds and then download soonest to your computer
as the link is short lived.

http://web.ebscohost.com/serrc/pdf?sid=06eb7858-d847-4da7-94c0-fe42ef9dc405@sessionmgr4&vid=4&hid=10

For the reverse locking mechanism, see items 12/13/14/15 and 16 under Drive Shaft Housing in the Parts listing. The rod, item 13 connects to item 26 under CLAMP BRACKET AND REVERSE LOCk.

Try to digest this and come back to us with your questions.

I have the shock obsorbers on the outside of the motor but not sure if they made a model with no power trim system because thats what i seem to have lol. so the long tube that goes into the lower end from the locks, controls the locks how "hyd, mech" just trying to understand theroy of operation on that system by locks im refering to the hooks that attach to the bar on the trasom mount. i apoligize for my stupidy im very mechanical heck i fix airplanes for a living just the theroy is thowing me for a loop

Josh;

If you look under GEAR HOUSING ASSEMBLY, COMPLETE (SERIAL GROUP #1) (PAGE 1) at item 48, that is the device which forces the rod to move upwards and lock the engine.

Here is a link to a blown up view of it:

http://www.crowleymarine.com/parts/2496.cfm

Click on the picture and it will blow it up for you.

The engine is designed to be locked in Neutral and Reverse. When it is in Forward, the bottom tip of the rod is sitting at the very bottom of the sliding ramp of the cam, When you select Neutral or Reverse, the rod rides up the ramp to rest on the flat spot on top, and this will have pushed the locking hooks over the pin and the engine is locked.

Your engine should just have the shock absorbers and if someone had fitted a trim system to it you would definitely see the components.
