Need Help With Motor Mounts Now That New Stringers Are Installed

I have cut out my old motor mounts and are at the point where I have the new stringers installed. The problem I ran into is the old wood under the fiberglass was so rotted I could not tell what was used prior to them covering it up when it was first built.

I was going to take a large block of wood and cut it so it would match the length and width of the old mount, then notch it so it would rest on top of the new stringer. I was then going to add additional supports. When I add the new floor this would then hibe the supports. The floow would have a rectangle cut out that would allow this block to pas through. This new engine mount would then have an angle cut on the bottom that will match the hull of the boat.

Would this work? or does anyone have any similar pic's ?

Thanks

Many folks use layers of plywood laminated together for motor mounts.

For the best step by step fabrication of motor mounts, I would check out Friscoboaters Sea Ray Resto thread... He has a great video showing their construction and installation. Here's the thread link. http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?t=454460&page=46 Check around this post, #1138 and you shoud find all you need to know... Hope this helps

rob j used alum angle iron and set the isolators on the angle iron/alunimum. the alum was thru bolted to the stringer.....fantastic idea.
simple....fast ....and super strong

My motor mounts are different, they sit on top of the common floor (see old pic). I am not sure if I should support the floor well then mount a solid block on top or have somthing poke through the floor.

I am thinking my best bet is to support the floor with ribs directly under the mount, then bond a solid piece of wood or layered plywood to make the 7 X 3.5 X 12 land area my motor mount attaches to. In the end this would be totaly glassed in. This way if there were any small leaks it would not pass through any cut outs in the floor.

Frisco's were exterior on the outside of his stringers, mine are reversed on the opposite side.

Thanks for all the help guy's !

Based on your latest pic, I'd laminate 3/4" Ext. Grade plywood to make em, and glass em in. They'll last 30 yrs if you predrill and coat all holes with 3M 4200 when mounting the motor.

I'm with Woodonglass. I'd definitely make them out of plywood, 2 layers of 3/4 & glass everything in real good. Take care with the drilling, & sealing & they will last a long, long time...
