we were testing a 2hp johnson/evinrude outboard motor we put it in water and my husband went to start it and he pulled the handle to start it the propeler moved he did it a few times and then the handle did not retrack back in. also on top of the motor a screw kept loosening while doing this. well we then took the top off the motor and bam the starter coil came out and unraveled and now we have a mess we are wondering how to put it back together any help?????

Re: need help with the starter coil

Easier to do than to explain. First find a nail or pin or allen wrench or something that will fit into the little hole in the pulley. Take it all apart, including remove the rope from the pulley. Wind the spring in the housing counter-clockwise like coiling up a garden hose. Install the pulley pin into the end of the spring. Install center hub and tighten it. Wind the pulley all the way up, then back it off one turn. Stick the nail into the hole in the pulley, that will keep the pulley from rewinding. Then you have plenty of time to thread the rope back in and reinstall the knob. Remove nail while holding rope and let it slowly retract.
