Need help with throttle only button

I just purchased a 1987 Bayliner Capri 17' Bowrider with a 75 HP Mercury Outboard. I am having trouble with the throttle only button. The motor starts and idles for a few seconds, but when I try to engage the throttle to let it warm up, it engages the drive. What am I doing wrong?

Any help would be appreciated, there aren't too many days left to use it.

Welcome to iboats!

Exactly how you get the controls into throttle-only mode depends on what control box you have. If you have the original US Marine controls, the entire handle pulls out about 1/2" at the pivot point. You then push forward for fast idle. Note that full throttle is not available this way.
