I am helping a friend get his old houseboat running. The engine is a 1963 Chrysler 318 CI straight inboard. HE took the engine apart and has turned it over several times with the distributer out. I have looked all over the harmonic balancer and cannot find any mark, line or anything that would indicate TDC. Furthermore there is no index point or anything above the harmonic balancer to tell you where to line it up even if there was something on the balancer. I cannot find any service manuals or online documentation for this. Does anyone have an idea....this thing was built before I was born (by a year) ???

Re: Need help with Timing mark

I was a big Mopar fan back in the 80's The timing mark sometimes was an abscure little cut, not all the way through the surface ( about 3/16") long. You say there is no timing marks on the timing chain cover? that's problematic. Check to see if you can see spot welds where there might have been one. Try to find mark by setting engine @ TDC (piston at top travel and both intake and exhaust valves shut) The mark should be in a visible spot.

Good Luck

Dang! I got an old Chiltons manual around here some where that should cover that but I can't find it!(Gotta be my wifes fault)
Going by the year its probubly a "poly" 318. The timing covers will interchange with the "LA"s but that don't mean they're the same. The degree plate may be(or was)rivited on. Go to www.chryslercrew.com and ask Dave, he should be able to help.

Re: Need help with Timing mark

Just thought I would post what I found. The timing mark is on the flywheel ! There is an inspection hole in the bellhousing, the pointer is there and the timing mark is engraved into the flywheel. That's a first for me.
