Need help with trim solenoid ground wire

I'll try and describe this as best as I could:Just picked up a new trim/tilt solenoid. In looking at the way the current one is wired , I noticed the ground wires{there are 2 solenoids} come off the small metal posts on each solenoid ,and the other ends go to the large rubber grommet on the solenoid. Inside the grommet is a metal sleeve. It seems strange that the grounds are mounted to the FRONT side of the grommets because the backsides have more metal contact , via the flat/flanged end of that metal sleeve. The front of the sleeve is just a normal end. When I put the new solenoid on should I mount the ground wires BEHIND the solenoid against the head and the larger area of the metal sleeve??

My manual is for '97 up midrange engines.

First of all to energize the solenoid, you use the two small terminal posts. 12v dc goes to one post (when you want to move that direction) and ground is connected to the other. Ground is a short black wire that goes from one of the posts to one of the screws that mounts the solenoid to the engine. Both solenoids are wired identical for grounds. Then there is a separate black wire connected under the other mounting screw of the down solenoid that comes out of the wiring harness to insure a good ground back to the battery.

The up relay is powered by a blue white wire; the down relay, by a green white wire.

If I understand you correctly, your small terminal(s) will have more than one nut. The inner nut holds the post to the sole housing. The gnd wire(s) [and the control wire(s) that supplies 12v on the other terminal] connects between the two nuts.

I understand where all the wires go { I made sure to draw a diagram before taking apart} but my question was , on the two small grounds { one on each solenoid } , they were initially mounted on the front of the large rubber grommet , which is the same hole where the mounting bolts go.I noticed that if mounted BEHIND the solenoid, it came in contact with much more metal,because the inner metal sleeve that goes thru the rubber grommet has a flat/flanged end on the backside , plus , it is also touching the large mounting panel behind the solenoids.As far as a large black ground going back to the battery , there is not one of those apparent.

The coil that energizes the solenoid won't run over a couple of amperes. That's not very much but it never hurts to get as good a ground as is convenient to get. If I correctly understand what you said you are perfectly correct in wanting to move it.

You are just looking for a connection to the chassis of the engine because the chassis of the engine is connected back to the battery regardless of whether or not you have a dedicated gnd wire in your harness for trim.
