B = Battery + = large RED wire. (power to the ignition switch)
M = Magneto = black wire (engine kill function)
M = Magneto = black wire with yellow stripe (engine kill function)
I = Ignition/Run = purple wire (powers instruments)
C = choke/primer solenoid = ?? (one of the other two)
S = Starter solenoid = ?? (one of the other two)

Are the two black wires interchangeable or do they have to be on specific m's.

The two blacks are not specific. Their only function is to kill the engine when the key is turned off. They get connected together at that point to short the magneto killing the engine. The letters on the switch and their function are correct. The way you check which wire does what is to use a meter to check for voltage at the end of each wire as you turn the switch to the various positions. But first you verify that you have 12 volts on the B terminal of the switch. If not, you have a wiring or battery issue either back at the engine, or you have bad/loose/corroded battery cable connections. When you have 12 volts at the B terminal, turn the switch to RUN. You should now have 12 volts on the "I" terminal. Whatever color wire feeds the 12 volt terminals on the instruments is what should be connected to the "I" terminal. Skip voltage checks on the two "M" terminals because there isn't any voltage there. Turn the key to START and see if you have 12 volts at the small terminal on the starter solenoid. If not, follow that wire back to the switch to verify it's integrity. Repeat the test for the choke/primer solenoid by pushing in on the key while you take the measurement at the choke or primer solenoid wire. Until you get power to the switch nothing is going to work.

im not getting 12 volts to b+. funny because before swapping the switch it was working fine . only reason for swapping was that the threaded end of the switch snapped.

1984 Johnson 65 hp. j65celtrs...any help would be appreciated.

For information on the details of the wiring of the ignition key switch on an OMC outboard engine, see

http://continuouswave.com/whaler/ref...ionSwitch.html

You will find an illustrated article that discusses in detail the wiring of the OMC ignition key switch.

This article on the wiring of the OMC ignition key switch will answer all of your questions, including identification of the function of particular conductors by the color of their insulation.
