This weekend I changed out the impellar on my 1989 9.9 Yamaha...I thought when I took the lower unit off that it was in neutral....Now I am trying to reinstall the Lower unit and I can not get it attached...I put the shifter in neutral but when I slide the lower unit up the shift will be push to forward..it will only attach if I have the shifter in forward......any suggestions....When the manual talks about reinstalling the lower unit is says "make sure that your lower unit is in neutral"...Is there a way to put the lower unit in neutral when it is detached from the engine?
I was trying to figure this out for a couple hours this weekend

Thanks

First find out what the lower unit is in , forward or reverse. Then you will have to rotate the little shift shaft that comes up from the lower unit.Do this with a socket (I forget which size) or with vice grips (on the lower part of the splines to avoid damage).
When I did my 75 it was in neutral but somehow got into forward.I studied the linkage and found the shaft rotated counter clockwise to go into forward and clockwise to go from forward back into neutral.I rotated it clockwise , got neutral and everything went back fine.

The info above will only work for a rotating type shift set up.Yours might be one where the shift rod goes up and down.

Hi Matt

My shift rod does go up and down.....any further thoughts?
I really do not want to get into take the prop off and dealing with the gears..but do you know of anyway to put it back into neutral through the prop shaft...

Find out what gear the lower unit is in.Then put the shifter in that position and then try to put it back together.

whatever you do DO NOT pull up on the shift rod ,it can and will disengage the shift cam from the follower and require prop shaft removal to reinstall it.
dunno what manual ya got but its WRONG.
push the shift shaft down while rotating the pro to engage reverse.
install the case to the engine making sure the water pump tube lines up,you may have to rotate the flywheel to aid in driveshaft alignment.
then shift the lever towards reverse to reattach the barrel nut.
