Need Help!

I just purchased a 1983, 20' Cuddy. The engine only has 100 hrs. on it and the boat itself looks real good. The problem is that it has been sitting outside, uncovered for more than three years. I was told that it needed a new floor. I removed all the seats, pulled up the carpet, and virtually picked the floor up in pieces everything was waterlogged and coming apart all the way to the bottom of the boat. My problem is that I don't know where to start. Can any of you tell me where I can get some detailed instructions to rebuild this boat completely, inside. I think I can do what I want as far as the engine cover, seats, carpeting etc. after I get the floor in. Any help would be very much appreciated.

Re: Need Help!

Head for the Boat Restoration section of the forum, down a bit from the top. That's what it's there for, and there are lots of folks who have done what you need to do and are willing to help.

Yup, go to Boat Restoration and search for Skanky Beast...that's one of the best ones with pix and a happy ending, too.

Re: Need Help!

heh, don't all boats look good until you lift up the floor in pieces? :D

well, to start with, get rid of the deck (floor)... just pull it out any way you can, then check the stringers for rot... there's a good chance that if the deck was rotten, that the stringers might also be rotten (the stringers are like floor joists on a house). If they are rotten, then most likely the transom is too... but I digress... you may get lucky and have well sealed (and thus) not rotten stringers and transom. If that's the case, then you can just lay in a new deck... but we'll get to that once you've gotten all the rot out.

Re: Need Help!

a deck replacement is uasually an easy one.....

its the first thing we do, and all stringer jobs require deck removal......

take everything outta the boat. and start ripping.

the deck will have been fiberglassed in....dont worry, just cut....a circ saw will do good......dont go too deep.......once you get the deck out you might see some foam in there......

this is a cross section view

if the foam is wet.....its gotta come out.....post back here with your findings and well guide you from there.

cheers
