I am about to go nuts here with this boat issue. Let me try and make this quick and clear. I have a 86 Sea Ray Seville mid cabin cruiser with a 4.3 mercruiser. Last year I started having trouble where after warm up and leaving the marina, I would open it up and the beast would start to sput and spit and backfire. Won't start. Found the carb filter plugged with black stuff. Clean and repeat several times. It would run fine for a day or 2 then do the same thing. Replaced the gas line after the water/fuel seperator because it appeared to be a air hose. Maybe the black stuff was coming from the hose. Worked and then it seemed that some gunk got passed the filter so I had the carb rebuilt. Well, it's a new year with the same old problem. Now when this happens, all I have to do is crack open the gas line at the filter and tighten back up again. Then it runs again. But now the filter is clean with no crud but still does the same thing. I was hoping I could finally enjoy the boat but it is becoming unlikely.

Re: Need help

Okay, thanks for all the help. I went this morning because you brought up something about my vent line. When I filled the tank this year, it started to overflow out the fill tube. Never done that before, it always came out the vent first. Had a paper wasp nest maybe in it. I took it out and damn it, same thing. I reluctantly called my mechanic. You cant find one in upstate New York because it's a part time job up here. He said he would check the pick up tube in the tank and see if it has a screen that may be plugged. Nope, But I did find the barbed fitting that went into the coupler for the tank tube to be loose. Had some old dried up blue slicone on it at one time. Taped it up and off it went. I am keeping my fingers crossed on this one, seems way too easy. Thanks again
