I have a 1990 Volvo Penta AQ131C. Bought it used, replaced timing belt, alternator, fuel pump, coil, plugs, wires, points, new distributor, carb was completely rebuilt.
My issue is once it is up and running, it barely runs at 1200 RPMs (throttle wide open). Had several different mechanics look at it and still haven't gotten any where. Can anyone point me in the right direction? I am not a mechanic, so I have to rely on the knowledge of others, please help! Thanks, in advance.

Re: Need Help!

Have you changed the fuel filters, and tried new gasoline supply. Maybe a fuel tank vent problem or anti-siphon valve.

Re: Need Help!

look at basics first. check volts to + side of coil. does your coil have an internal or external resistor? go back over everything. any exhaust restriction? choke opening? does it backfire and sputter or just won't go any higher? double check timing and advance. read over all of the posts on this subject on this forum for other ideas.

Re: Need Help!

I am running on a new above board tank, With a fresh fuel filter. Everything has been set to specs, and double checked. distributor was just replaced two days ago. It shows it advancing when we set timing. Is it possible for it to run if distributor is off? Maybe 180 degrees?
I have been told that if it was 180 off it wouldn't start at all? Its just strange, Ran the night before. (Driveway Test) The next day went to the water, It started but ran like it was barley running? had to keep throttle wide open to maintain 12-1500 RPMs. Kind of like she was flooded. But anything less of full Throttle she would die. So I gave up and brought her home?
Thanks again for your help.

Re: Need Help!

another thought. if your carb is dumping too much fuel into the motor, it won't run unless the throttle is wide open. check the float for heaviness and level. you can pull the spark arrestor and look into the throat while underway.

Re: Need Help!

How would I check the float for heaviness and it's level? I just had a complete Carburetor rebuild Party! Is there an adjustment or something? That we may of overlooked? I appreciate any help.

Re: Need Help!

I just rebuilt my carb also. The float measuring directions were very unclear. The kit had instructions that showed a dimension to a place on the float that had no identifying feature. I saw a merc instruction manual that showed the dimension to a "***" on the float. Also, I saw a merc bulletin that changed the dimension from what was earlier recommended.

Bottom line; do you have the right float dimensions and measuring spot?
