I just bought a project boat from a neighbor and have not recieved the papers yet, so, having trouble with identification of it. The boat is Glasspar. The model # is 81796, serial # 703356. The engine appears to be a Chrysler V-6. The stern is in pieces (all new) but without gaskets. What brand of stern was used as I do not know one from another yet. No ID marks anywhere on the stern as I have read there should be. Any help will be greatly appreciated.

A couple of photos would be a big help to let people identify your boat.

Re: Need ID help here.

I have ID'd the engine and out drive. It's a '72 OMC Stringer behind a GM 225 Oddfire. The engine has been modified as it has a Holley 4bbl carb setting on top and a fellow boater said that these engines did not come that way.
NOW, the only thing I need is the Upper case housing. It is missing. Any ideas where I may be able to locate a used one would be nice. I will submit pics soon.
Thanks for getting back to me on this and I will submit more info as I get it. I am going to completely restore this boat. Just for reference, the boat is a 17 footer.

Re: Need ID help here.

I may just end up doing that since the upper case is unavailabe now. I CAN buy a rebuilt upper case but all I really need is the case itself. All parts for the drive (upper AND lower) are brand new still in the boxes. I have everything to rebuild the unit EXCEPT the case for power head.
The person that told me what I have has 3 of the same setups on his boats and swears by them. And wouldn't you know, he does not have an extra that I can get from him, lol.

Hello;

If your in Canada you can try T.C. Electronics in Toronto or if in the USA try GLM. They have complete gearcases (expensive) and have empty upper cases as well .... hope this hels.

Well if you have everything brand new then there shouldn't be any harm in spending the money on a new upper. Keep searching e-bay, something should come up. I just didn't want to see anybody dish out a grand for a drive that might not work well, and if not won't be able to repair.

Good luck

T C Electronics and Sterndrive are the same company, so to speak and BOTH of them get their parts from GLM here in the states. Unfortunately, neither company has any empty cases at this time. Ebay is one place I haven't checked. Also, I am having the previous owner to check if he still has the top case and am checking all the old boats setting around in fields gathering weeds.
I will keep you guys updated as I get more info.
The engine, I found out has been fitted with a Holley 4160 and Offy 360 intake, which I found out is a normal upgrade for this little engine. HP rating is now 175, up from the standard 155. Can't wait to hear that baby run, lol.

Good luck, I browsed e-bay quickly and found a couple of upper units, not sure if they'll match up correctly, as I know little about OMC drives. There is hope on that site though.

I also just checked Ebay and asked for ID numbers on the cases. Just waiting for answers now. Maybe one of them will fit what I have.

Just talked with the guy I bought the boat from about missing case. He called the guy HE bought it from and that guy says he HAS the case, but it may take a couple days to find.
Stay tuned, lol.

Re: Need ID help here.

Tried working with the engine today and after 9 years of setting, the engine STILL turns freely by hand and has compression! After that, all I did was hook a charger to the battery that was already in it and after about 30 minutes of charging, the engine TURNED! Not much, but it tells me the starter is good and the engine has not siezed up over time. Next test will be to hook a fuel cell in, get more power to starter and see what happens. All I want to do right now is hear that engine bust off, I won't let it run no more than a minute, then shut it down. I already know I will be rebuilding the carb, but heck, let's see exactly what I have to work with here. So far, everything looks great, just some minor electrical issues (lights, horn and such).

Good to hear, what do you mean exactly by a fuel cell?

Re: Need ID help here.

Basically what I am going to do is unhook the fuel line from the carb, also unhook the fulel line from inlet of fuel pump, then hook a regular fuel tank (with bulb for presure) to the carburetor and see what happens. The existing fuel tank will come out and be cleaned thoroughly before I woud attempt to run the engine off it. 9 year old gas would probably not run well, would it?? Not to mention all the trash and such that MAY be inside it. The inside of the fuel cap is corroded badly and I don't want to take a chance of anything getting inside the carb, even though I will rebuild the 4160 after I hear that engine run. Again, all I want to do here is hear that engine fire ONCE, then I know I have something to work with. Ignition system (points, plugs, rotor, and cap) appear new also, so just MAYBE......

I am going to go out and take a couple pics and post them here. After all this IS a restoration project. Pics should be up in about 10 minutes.

Well, worked in theory anyway, my battery is dead in my camera! I will charge it about 30 minutes, THEN take the pics, so maybe 40 minutes or so, lol.

Re: Need ID help here.

Previous owner brought over the upper case along with a box full of NEW parts Sunday. Spent yesterday tesring down the intermediate and lower housings and rebuilding the entire unit. In the box, he had all parts that could be replaced, with the exception of shafts. So now I have a rebuilt stern with new parts. For the first time working on a stern drive, it went surprisingly well.
Now all I have to do is get that V6 going! Got to get fire from out of the coil to the plugs.
Hope all had a safe 4th!

Happy to hear you found your drive! It's always good when there's an easy solution to something annoying like not being able to get your boat in the water ;)
