So I was given a firestone outboard and I started by trying to figure out what I had. As I see it, its a 1958-59 firestone/Scott Atwater/McCullough 16 hp. Its got compression and the coils are destroyed from years of sitting. I'd like to put coils in it but I don't want to get upside down on this motor because at the end of the day I'm not sure that it'll move my boat well enough to justify the cost. What is like to know is A) is this motor what I beleive it to be? B) whats this motor worth? C) where's the best place for info on this exact motor? Please give me a hand and put my mind at ease. I will post pictures shortly.

A... Not sure.
B.... Running, about $2-$400 as wall art, about $200
C.....AOMCI.org

Restoring old outboards needs to be a passion. If you want a motor to simply push your boat, plenty of 70's,80's and 90's outboards in the $100-$300 range that probably only need an impeller

No I'm a gear head. I love stuff like this. But if it pushes my boat well I wont worry too much about what its worth.I had some trouble navigating AOMCI but ill take another crack at it. Thanks

you can push a 37' boat with a 2hp.

keep in mind, your motor will need lots of oil as the ratio was 24:1. also the coils may be a bit. I dumped two mid 50's merc's because the cost of ignition components was more than i wanted to spend on a fishing boat motor. even with the sentimental attachment to my father.

You have a 1958 scott atwater built 16 hp. Coils can be had for much cheaper than Merc coils. You can get them off the Martin website for about $45 apiece. Here is the bad news your motor has the same badly designed water pump set-up as the bailamatic motors. So frequent water pump changes are a must and not the easiest pump to do. Find a better motor for everyday use and keep the firestone for a hobby. I have the same motor.

I restored a 54 and got it to run. Did the coil swap and cleaned everything with new paint and decals. A guy bought it for his man cave because him and his dad had one just like it on their boat when he was a kid. Had more money in it then I got but did I have fun restoring that old gem. :joyous:
