Took my '83 Johnson 235 exh manifold in ot a welding shop, to have a little welding done to repair some porosity. BUT... they discovered that it does not weld very well. The welding shop is looking for me to help them determine material specs. Anyone out there with any ideas of what the material spec's are?

I'm told that is neither 100% aluminum NOR 100% magnesium.and that it welds as if it's oil impregnated or carbon contaminated magnesium.

Thanx inadvance for any help...

ob1

Being that is an exhaust manifold, I would say it is everything that they are describing.

Thanx for the response... And I guess I should have told the full story...

This welder is pretty knowledgeable about the fact that there are residual oils & carbon. I know the welder as a personal friend, and have seen him do some pretty amazing things before.

For instance, anyone who can take a set of broken pistons from a top-fuel Keith-Black Hemi, and repair-weld, then machine and balance them... THEN use them another two full seasons... Just to prove he could do so, is a welder (and machinist) extrodinaire in my book.

He's welded a HUGE variety of materials, but says this stuff is un-weldable... (even after de-greased in his solution of cleaners for a week...)

I've already replaced the manifold... Was simply hoping to find someone, who could help us learn what this material is... It's become a pride thing to my friend to find out what material it is, so he can find a way to weld it...

Any help with material identification is appreciated...
