I have 1 40hp Johnson, and may soon be acquiring a second one. The one I have now is all white with some red lettering. Model #RD-SL22CC. Serial #2097803. Can anyone tell me some info on this motor? Also, the second motor is almost identical, but with black lettering instead of red. Is it newer/older? Also, I need new points/condensers, water pump impeller, and thermostat & gasket for the one I own now. None of the local boat shops want to deal with a motor this old. :( Anybody know of any good shops in central California? Or a good place to order some parts from? Thanks -Wes

LilWes..... That RDS22 is a 1960 40hp Johnson. Part numbers are: Points 580148, Condensors 581419, S/plugs Champion J4C or J6C set at .030 . Water pump impeller 377230, Thermostat 378065.

Any reliable Evinrude/Johnson dealership should have those item in stock as they fit many other models. However, if you can't find those items, get back to us as I'm sure many of us still have those items in out remaining stock.

Also, any suggestions on GOOD repair manuals? I've never replaced an impeller before, but I've been told these motors are pretty simple, so I'm gonna give it a shot. Thanks again for the help -Wes

Hi, does anyone have some good ideas as to where I could look for a new/good powerhead for my 1965 Johnson 40 horse? Any leads would be great.
Thanks!
Craig

lilwes,NAPA auto parts lists ignition, fuel and
cooling parts. They have a 600 page marine
products catalog they ordered for me just for the asking.Something like 67 pages of E/J parts.

Re: Need info/parts for (2) 40hp Johnsons

Ok, now I have a new dilemna. I have a 1978 15' Marlin trihull, that my 40hp Johnson is mounted on. I've never had the boat in the water since I bought it about 4 months ago (restoring it). Boat says it's rated to 75hp. My father has an 80hp Mercury he wants to give me, and I have a friend that wants this 40hp. Should I step up to the bigger motor, or will it be extreme overkill?

well...for comparison purposes, I had a 15' fiberglass tri hull, rated at 50hp, with a 55hp rude. It was fine, worked great and held 30mph easy. however, I came across a 1980 (I think) army surplus 40hp rude with VERY few hours. When I switched I swear it was 5 mph faster, alltho maby a tad slower out of the hole. Some times bigger doesnt help...
Craig

Re: Need info/parts for (2) 40hp Johnsons

Ok, I got the model and serial #s off the other 40hp. Model #RDSL30C (which I already figured out is a 1968), and serial #J2827881. Guy that has it got it from one of his fishing buddies, and says that his friend told him the pump was out. I asked water pump, or fuel pump? He said he didn't know, never tried to start it. But he's only wanting $100 for the motor, all the controls and the fuel tank. His story sounds legit, think I'm gonna buy it. Gonna see if I can get it going, maybe sell my '60 to my friend for some extra $, and move up to a newer engine. Sound like a plan to you guys? Thanks -Wes

For good repair manual, you should be able to buy a Clymer 1956-1972 J/E Repair Manual at any marine store.

These engines are easy to work on. You may need a flywheel puller and a flywheel holder, which a J/E dealer can get for you.

Parts are everywhere, especially on eBay.
