Can anyone tell anything about an old Johnson Model K 80 Ser#248550? circa 1930s-40s? Rope start, square cornered fuel tank that half surrounds the engine.

Welcome to Iboats!

That's a 1936 9.3hp, by the model and serial number. Displacement is 13.96 cubic inches, WOT rpms is 4000, Spark plug is Champion K60R (I don't know if that's still available, we may be able to cross-reference it), weight 64lbs, price $165.00.

This may be of some help:
http://users2.ev1.net/~rainbowchaser/manuals/ejs/ejs.html

The original fuel/oil mix is 8:1 (1 pint/gallon of SAE 40 weight). I don't think 16:1 with TC-W3 would be bad, but other's here with old iron could probably advise better. Or the folks over at aomci.org .

Hope that helps!

Paul,

I think the last thing I heard from AOMCI was that they were recommending 24:1 on all those old outboards. I don't know, but if it was really 8:1 back then, I think I'd stick with 16:1, as you suggested. The oil's a lot better these days, and I'm sure it would be OK at 16:1.

Now, that would be a cute engine to have hanging off the back of a nicely restored wooden fishing boat, I think.
