Where can I get a spare key made for my 1996 Johnson 88? I struck out at Ace and Tru-Value...they don't have the right blank. Any ideas?

Re: Need Johnson key made

I recently lost my key for my boat. Same situation, no one had a blank. I went to the marina , they are an OMC dealer, and was going to buy a new switch. When I told them "I am buying the switch because I had lost my key" they told me that they can sell just the key that will work.

Cost $5!! Lot better that the $30 they wanted for the switch.

There is a number stamped or etched into the switch, mine was right beside the slot where you put the key in. 2 digit number. That was all they needed to sell me the correct key.

Look for that number and give your local Johnson dealer a call.

Call Sea-Way Marine in Seattle (sea-way.com) 206-937-7373. They sell keys for all OMC ignitions. Get the number first, though.

Re: Need Johnson key made

I got a generic key made from Lowes for my 1993 Johnson 50. It doesn't have the heavy black grip, but hey its just a key. I was not going to buy a new switch!!
The guy at Lowes was like we don't do marine stuff. I just said its a key - if you don't want to try the blanks, I will. After about 5 blanks, he found one that fit.
I think it was key blank 87 or 88....Can check when I get home

The keys that the BRP dealers sell are not blanks. The numbers on the switch identify the pre-cut keys.
