Need lower unit for a 1999 Mercury..what years are compatible?

I messed up my lower unit on my mercury 25hp 1999 2 stroke and have been trying to find a used unit. I see alot of 1994's but dont know what units are the same. any one have a clue?>

Lot of years are compatible stay away from mid 80s and earlier and there was a design change on the shift rods.

Do you have a serial number for this motor? According to what I've read Mercury did not publish year models for serial numbers after 1996. I was trying to look it up for you and find applications on the boats dot net site.
