hey guys, im new here but saw all the good advice yall give so figured id ask a few questions. im in the process of buying a 16' bass tracker from my girlfriends dad to upgrade from my current bowfishing boat, im certified through john deere in electrical systems so i understand and know it, but im wondering if there is some type of outboard driven generator out there? im gonna be pushung 7 or 8 55w flood lights, maybe a radio, bilge pump, and nav lights for up to 6 hours (outboard will have dedicated battery) and would like to do this without having a whole bunch of batteries or running a generator. any suggestions?

NO! Period! Figure the total current draw. You are exceeding the maximum current draw of a 55# thrust trolling motor (about 46 amps). There is no outboard generator that can produce that kind of current continuouisly. If there was, the engine would need to be running at wide open throttle so why the objection to using a very quiet 1Kw portable generator that is much quieter than the outboard.

Re: need more power

sorry, i shouldve explained better, im not planning on running the components directly from the outboard, i just mean some type of upgrade that would charge an aux. battery while also charging the dedicated outboard battery while the outboard IS running. and about how long would 2 deep cycle optimas keep theses components going? not sure of the batteries ratings.

Re: need more power

Outboards have an alternator for battery charging so you don't need to hang something extra on it. You can't see it because it is under the flywheel and is a stator type of system. That said, my response and that of the others is exactly the same. You CANNOT keep two deep cycles charged with that type of load. You need a minium 50 amp alternator to keep up with a 50 amp load. 50 amp alternators are not found on most outboards and if you do the engine must operate wide open throttle to produce that output. It doesn't matter what type of charging system is used, its all about OUTPUT. This is all basic stuff.

ok, thanks silvertip, i guess i should have asked if an outboard could charge the motors batteery and an aux. battery without a load on the aux. battery, instead of wording it the way i did, but ive got it now. on a second note approx. how many amps can this motor supply? its an 87 mercury classic 50 45hp
