I have a 16 foot 1983 Bayliner capri bowrider. Its a good little boat for our first purchase but I have found I need some more storage. My uncle who owned the boat before me put a new floor in and didn't put the ski storage hatch back in. I was wondering if anyone had ideas as to how I could add more storage, and how I could go about finding out a safe place to put some sort of storage hatch in the floor.

Can I just cut a hole in the floor where I think the old hatch was, between the back to back seats? Would I be better off removing the right hand side back to back and put in a single seat with pedestal? Or both?

There is never enough storage! :( You could tow a barge!:)
I would cut a hole in the center of the where the locker is and go out from there. Obviously you don't want to go outside of the existing locker.

I boxed in the rear seats. I can remove the tops and store stuff inside.

At the moment, my seat is a bench seat across the front with storage underneath. The plan is to cut the existing seat in half to make it lower, move the top half with the cushion aft, make another base to cover the existing lower half and put a couple of swivel seats on top of that. 2 large storage spaces, plus still figuring out what I can store underneath the splash well

I made extra storage area under the back to back seats on my 16 footer. I just used a jigsaw and cut rectangle with rounded corners in each base inboard side, this hole is just big enough that I can easilt reach into it, about 4"x6" I can shove all my ski ropes and harness under there, the other side I stow a small batch of tools in plastic box and some other stuff like extra prop, siphon hose and some other misc. junk. Then there is storage under the front seats that set upon a bench like in the guys post above (sorry guy can't go back right now and see ya) also I fabricated a block off panel with a door cut into it for accessing the bow area, I can put alot of stuff up there without it all working back out in rough water, oars and skis I can put in the gunnels, I don't even have a ski locker never did and thats a biggie for storage, I would do one if it was possible but mine isn't a deep V so it wont have the room, yours does definately wasted space if you don't put a locker back in there.

Hey bear 69cuda,
Is that a subwoofer in the back of your boat? If yes, cool beans.

Not sure how the seating is set up in ur boat but in mine I have the driver and passanger seat front and back that fold out into a bed. I just found last weekend under there is a big spot for storage. But can only get to it when you are folding the seat down or up. ANY ONE ELSES USES THAT SPOT.

I do! 1995 Sea Ray 195 with lounge seating. Found it a great place to store those items you must carry but rarely use. Still looking for more storage areas though.

The Alpine Sub is awesome... I think I have less than $600 in the stereo ( head unit, amp, 4 Polk and one Alpine sub) and it sounds really great! The storage area helped me mount all my electronics.. All info found in my resto thread...

dkorzun, you are supposed to use the area under the seats for storage.

His n hers, under the splashwell is where you put the anchor, tanks and battery--if that works for weight distribution. My old Starcraft had a pair of sliding doors across the front of that area, vented with the metal screen like you use for (home) radiator covers.

All: if your PFD's aren't readily accessible you aren't legal. Even the white case for the orange ones should be unzipped and of course all PFD's out of their plastic bags! Not an issue if everyone wears one but many adults don't.
