Need opinions on not staying running

Just got back from lake. Boat would start, die when shifting too reverse. It would go into forward most times with out stalling.
Pulled the kids around on tube when I would shut it down to get swimmers on board. it would just die.
A couple times had to put it in nuetral with gas to get it started.
Boat ran fine when pulling.
Started the boat 10 times in driveway with muffs last couple of days, no idle problems. The water load made a difference

New wires, distrb cap. sensor in cap -thunderbolt, new coil

Plan on spraying carb cleaner in carb, new fuel/water seperator filter, change plugs.

Known partial problem. The neutral switch in handle is giving me some problems, have to shake handle to get it to turnover.
Never adjusted linkage from handle to back, have had the boat new from 1989.
It also never came with a water/fuel separator, I added one in line from tank to fuel pump...Would that make a difference at idle?

Thanks in advanced for any help.

might be a bad lower cable, any service history on the outdrive? a overheat can damage the shift cable too.

What year is it......is it carbed motor or EFI?

I chased a notorious problem similar to that once and it was a worn accelerator pump in the carb. Spraying carb cleaner only makes YOU feel better ...... the proper way is to take the carb apart and completely clean it. I strongly recommend using a dip solvent too.

Re: Need opinions on not staying running

Had the impeller replaced 4-5 times. Never had the linkage looked at.
Did not know I needed to replace bellows until a few months ago reading this forum. Am doing it this winter or spring.

Took off water/gas seperator poured into glass jar, do not see any water.
Plugs look new, will replace them anyway.

I am thinking a switch in the handle or the switch in back that stalls the boat for a second going into gear might need adjusted or replaced, or maybe both

Any more thoughts

I had a similar instance, my problem was the cutout switch was out of adjustment. It would be engaged in neutral and reverse killing the engine. As long as I was in forward, no problem. After a bit of adjusting, has run fine ever since! Good luck

If it dies when you go into gear, you have shift cable problems. 99% of the time you need a new lower shift cable.

This may help you understand the system a bit better http://forums.iboats.com/showthread.php?p=1930449#post1930449

Thanks All. I have read this twice before I posted.
It shifts fine, just engine dies going from forward to neutral after running it, or from nuetral when running to reverse at idle. Worked a couple of times today, but mostly not.

I will read and check into lower shift cable.
Never been in salt water. Also garage stored. I dont see rust on anything.
Maybe stretched cable, old age
Thanks Don

Don and others.
I have read hours of old posts. Everything points to lower cable from other posters.
Here are some photos

8-15-12 boat 023.jpg8-15-12 boat 020.jpg8-15-12 boat 019.jpg8-15-12 boat 021.jpg8-15-12 boat 022.jpg

The shift bellow is plyable and does not look bad for 23 year old part? Dont get it. Am going to do them all fall or spring.

Control Cables shifts easy when boat is running, alittle hard when engine is turned off.Power assisted?
Took photo of a what looks like a rusted interupter switch. The metal plate is rusted where the little plunger goes in. Looks like a wire comes out of the top and wraps around to underneath to a selonoid or relay of some sorts.

Should I spray some cleaner on that part or replace it first. Could I be the 1%.

I'd exercise the switch a little and see if it moves smoothly. It might just have a sticky spot that can be gotten rid of by movement.
I would not spray things in there, it's an electrical switch after all.
If you remove the lower shift cable from the shift plate and find that it moves through the shifter range smoothly you can then adjust the shift cable. It's very likely however that the cable is no good.
As Don alluded your complaint is usually a result of a sticky lower cable. Check that next so you aren't beating your head against the wall chasing the wrong issue.

Re: Need opinions on not staying running

Called a marine / auto place 10 minutes from house. They have been there 28 years. Also seen race boats parked in fenced in area over the years. Owner owns a twin engine race boat.
He said 4-5 hundred for the lower end service, bellows and cable. He also said over the phone that my stalling in reverse is probably
The lower shift cable stretched and letting the interuppter switch stay on too long.

That made me feel good that he said just what Don S said.

I thought with buying the tools and such that was a good price for me to have him do it. Going to do the trim pucks since they are 23 years old.
Cant use the boat with it stalling in reverse, too much headache on the ramp.

Tackled many auto jobs over the years, with min. experience ,and have auto tools.
Was abit intimidated on doing that rear end service. I also maintain 5 vehicals at home, with kids driving, gets to me sometimes keeping up.
Hope he does a good job and puts me back on the lake almost worry free.

ps.
Some marinas down on the river, 30 min. from me quoted 7-8 hundred, and one said 1200. Both said depending on the gimbal that price would get more. Big difference in price.
The high one was a big boat - SeaRay dealer.Hundreds of boats around. Big showroom.
The medium price was a Medium size boat shop, 20-30 boats. Been around 30 years
The lower price shop is half cars, 6 boats in fenced in area. Been around 28 years is why I felt good about it. Plus he owns a big race boat.
It all that money overhead for the price differences.
