i am considering a purchase of the following package: 1988 16ft tempest bowrider with a 2.3l 140 hp ford omc cobra i/o. asking price is $6500 can. does this pricing seem excessive? i'm planning on travelling 2 hrs on tues to see it, any tips on things to look for appreciated. planing on doing a compression test, anyone have acceptable numbers for this engine?

Way too much $$ IMHO. You can buy way more boat, newer, bigger engine for that kind of $$.

You are aware that OMC Sterndrive is no longer in business??

You might want to consider the potential difficulties in obtaining OMC parts and service, considering the company no longer exists. I'm not sure of Canadian valuations, but it seems a bit pricey for a 17 year old boat.

You're getting ripped off. Period. Maybe for 3500 I would consider. I'm not an OMC hater, I have an OMC. That is a small motor in a small boat for a big price.

Franger...I agree the price seems high, do you look through the Boat Trader? On this page (near bottom) you will see a 1989 Tempest 15 with 2.3 lt I/O and trailer asking $3999 CDN Tempest

About the Only Way this Deal could get Any Worse is,..........
If it was a Bilgeliner,...... for More Money,.................. :D

At Best,......... That boat is Possibly Worth 1/2 the asking Price.........
I bet that boat Didn't even sell for 1/2 the asking price when it was Brand New,.. In 1988...........

It's an Old Entry Level boat with a motor that Wasn't very popular Then,...And Even Less So Now.........
And even though the Cobra is better than a Stringer Drive,..........
The OEM is Extinct,... Out of Business,.... GONE................

Keep Looking,........... There's Plenty of Other Boats,.......
And,... Plenty of Other Thieves Willing to Steal Your $6500.00can..........

Good Luck,.........

I have to agree with everyone else....the price is way too high. Negotiating is one thing, but this would be worlds apart in my book, I wouldn't even make the trip unless the guy agreed to half of the asking price on the phone.

Agreed--too high for such an old boat with small engine. I bought a 20' runabout with OMC V8 5.0/Cobra for less than that. Mine has been fine, but I do feel like I'm living on borrowed time knowing at some point I'll have the inevitable decision to make of is is worth going thru the hassle of fixing...

Keep shopping, there are lots of gems out there

Re: need opinions on omc purchase

thanks for all the replies guys. based on all the negative feedback, i passed on that boat. out of curiousity, i watched the ad in the boat trader and was surprised to find out it sold in less than a week for the full price. i realize that there is a sucker born every minute, but after checking local prices vs nad guides pricing, i believe that canadian -southern ontario- prices are considerably higher than in the u.s. must be a lack of used boats. again guys, thanks for the input.
