Any opinions on which to go with an 89 bayliner capri (not sure size) with a 89 chev single inboard/outboard 120 or a 91 bayliner capri 17ft with a 70hp force???? both are about the same price and both are suppose to be running good and in good condition. Any suggestions on the questions I need to ask before buying either? We want it for a little of everything, fishing, swimming, skiing, tubing, wakeboarding,- kids and adults.

You failed to include the out drive information on the I/O. This will make a difference in the discussion here, and in the eventual decision....

You don't want the Force as parts and service support are dwindling for those. You need to find out if the I/O is a Mercruiser, Volvo, or OMC. Avoid the OMC for the same reason. ANY older fiberglass boat needs to be inspected carefully for rot in the wooden components of the hull. You want a solid deck and transom. Any soft spots in the deck could indicate more serious rot below in the stringers.

Exactly. I didn't want to start a war saying the three lettered named out drive...

89 120hp bayliner should be a 2.3L/OMC combo

Need more info for an honest assesment. What is the condition of the floor/stringers? Interior? How does it run? What motor does it have? Pictures always help. Are we talking $3000 or $10,000? The more info you can give, the better the responses will be. Just an FYI.

Stringers are essentially the "floor joists" under the deck. OMC is a brand of inboard/outboard powerplant that went out of business in the lat 90's that is difficult to get parts and service for. Any brand of outboard except Force is fine, Mercruiser or Volvo are fine for I/O's.

Thank u how do I look at the stringers?????

Next question speed wise what is the difference between the 120 inboard and the 70hp outboard???

The inboard is at a dealer and the outboard is a private seller.

So if it is a chevy like it says does that mean it is not omc???

Just about all I/O's use Chevy engines so that part is somewhat meaningless. You need to find out if it's a Volvo, Mercruiser, or OMC drive.

Outboards are usually a little faster than their equivalent HP inboard due to the inboard being a good deal heavier. A 90 outboard would probably be close to the same power as a 120 inboard.

Sure, so long as your are going down hill! The merc will get her moving, but planning will be slow enough to kill any fuel savings. Skiers no, but tubing is an option.

Re: Need opinions!! thanks

I was just asking cause we have a 50 hp that works so if we got the outboard 70 hp force and it didn't hold up we would still be able to have fun.
