Need parts...what year motors will work for my Merc

Hi All,
I got my first Merc! 50hp and it's a pull start. Serial number is 7174509. I'm still trying to figure out what year it is and if I need parts, what motors will work. I'm sure the parts are interchangeable between certain years.
I want to change it over to an electric start and need a starter and a new flywheel to begin.
If you do not think this is a good idea to change it over, can you tell me your reasons why, thanks.
Any help, tips, hints would be appreciated, if you have em'.

That is a 1980/81 motor.... classic 4 cylinder Merc.

You'll find parts interchangeability from 1980 through 1985 50hp for the most part. From 1986 through 1989 they were rebadged as a 45hp motor...though essentially an identical motor. There may be some differences with the carb/ignition system in the later years 87-89.

Can't really think of any reasons why not to convert it to an electric start, oher than cost. You may find it difficult to get the parts you need, at a reasonable price. Might be easier (cheaper) to locate a blown motor to scavenge the parts from than to consider buying them separately.

Good luck!

Thanks AMD Rules....that is what I had planned; buying a blown motor and getting my parts from it.
Once I do get it, I'll be posting a few more questions here.

Thanks again,
Brother Chris.
