1971 50 HP Evinrude 50173S

Problem of the week and maybe next couple of months. Boat ran 24 mph this last weekend but was slow getting up. Hard to start, blowing a little fuel out of the top carb into the air silencer. Ran a compression check today and had 45 in the lower cyl and 55 in the top. Pulled the head this afternoon and the gasket was blown on the top cylinder into the water passage. The top clyinder is scored pretty bad. The lower piston is missing a small edge of the piston and is looking pretty thin in a few other areas. Definately needs a lower piston.

Questions are:

Looks like there is a sleeve, can they be replaced and whats a ballpark figure for the sleeves and labor?

The local marine dealer here priced me pistons at 185 apiece, is the a online source and are used pistons an option?

Is there any place that has rebuilt powerheads?

Thanks, Gary

Re: Need parts

I don't know how far north you are, but when I couldn't find a part for my 1963 evinrude, Stone and Son in Houston always came through. Also check ebay if you want to risk a deal
JT

Re: Need parts

I recentely rebuilt a v4 johnson. I purchased an rebuild kit from maxrules
The cylinders can be bored out and larger pistons installed. The local automotive machine shop in Beaumont Tx charged $ 30. per cylinder.
There are several places you can have your power head rebuilt. One site you can check out is boatpartstore com. they claim to offer a life time waranty and I have read a post on this forum of a person who had them rebuild his power head and it seem to be a good job. Their price on a 2 cyl johnson evierude is $890. Including shipping.
Another site is powerheadexchange. They have rebuild kits and a good seledtion of parts.
