I am looking for a correct pair of decals to apply to my 1971 Evinrude 3 U.S. gallon (2? Imperial) gas tank. I am not finding them for the era in question. All that I can find are decals for the older pressurized tanks. Besides having different graphics, the tanks also came in different capacities than the later tanks (1959ish and later non-pressurized tanks).

I was wondering if anyone out there either knows of a set of the correct decals, or perhaps has a tank with very good graphics that can be photographed and used to reproduce them. I have made a business case with one vendor (I stressed that one style can cover many different years...) One important detail is that the vendor asked if I could submit a quality image and /or measurements and they would seriously consider producing them (hooray!) So...

Does anybody have a link to a clear image of the Evinrude graphics for the smaller tank? If you have the same for the larger 6 (5 imperial) gallon tank, plus the Johnson versions as well that would definitely be icing on the cake! Now the Johnson style changed between the 1960?s style and the 1970?s style as well. This could be a chance to really make a difference people. We could end up with a source for some nice decals for post-1950s Evinrude and Johnson tanks. Whadda you say?

P.S. I did find a source for 1959-63ish large Johnson tank decals that spell out the 24:1 mixture. That doesn?t help for the smaller tank, plus I want the correct Evinrude style.

Shown below left is a '69 Evinrude Lightwin 4 with tank; below right in black & white is a '71 tank from my owner's manual.

Re: Need photos for tank decals to be made up

I already tried him but he doesn't have the tank decals that new. He said he'd be interested but he needs to make up decals from a good set or a clean original tank. So far nothing. That was a good suggestion though Tashasdaddy. Thank you the same.

Still looking. If anybody has a clean tank and could get pictures clear enough to use to make up a new decal from...

On the plus side my New Old Stock complete set of 1971 Evinrude Lightwin decals just arrived. Yes!

Re: Need photos for tank decals to be made up

I'm just trying to bring this one back to the top after 2 weeks.

Nobody has a decent 3 (2.5) gallon tank with legible decals?

I think they came standard only on the 4 horse (& '68 3 horse) but were a factory alternate to the 6 (5) gallon with a new motor. Once somebody comes up with a decent picture I can get them made up and they will become available. We just need one...

There's one on ebay right now that looks similar. It doesn't say what year it is though.
gas tank on ebay
Still has three days left. Maybe if you sweet talk him he might snap a higher res picture for you. Assuming of course that the tank is even close to the right year. Good luck! And bump! :)

Cheers...................Todd

Re: Need photos for tank decals to be made up

Thanks Todd! I appreciate it.

It isn't 100% exactly the style I was seeking but it may be the best lead yet. It looks like it has the 50:1 mix info on it. It may be the style I settle on if I can't find another. I wonder what year it is exactly?

Maybe I should bid on the thing while I'm at it. I don't know, I have an OMC accessory small tank without the gauge, plus a '60 & a '65 5 imperial gallon tank, plus a small pressurized '58 tank for my '58 7.5.

Re: Need photos for tank decals to be made up

Update: I found a dealer in New Jersey who was listed as having 1 N.O.S. set available. I contacted them and found that they had 1 set, but 1 of the 2 decals in the set was damaged (they are both the same decal anyway). The good news is he is going to send it to me for the price of postage! Once I get it I have a vendor that is interested in reproducing them. At that point I will update this post. Hopefully there will be some pretty looking small Evinrude metal tanks around in the future because of this endeavor.

P.S. John Bovie said his business has been around for 42 years. He has bought up various lots of N.O.S. (New Obsolete Stock) from dealers over the years. The stuff that isn?t on a computerized listing is the oldest stuff so you'd need to submit a wish list and check back later. If you are restoring an old Evinrude you might keep them in mind.
