As the title says, i'm looking for a combo unit. Somewhere in the 5" range I would guess. Simple a plus as this will be my first. I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff, so don't be afraid to talk to me like i'm a first grader. lol

hmm.... Or should I go with a fish finder and a handheld gps??

check out the garmin gpsmap units with sonar. Quality units and hands down easiest to use.

Humminbird 597 series. If you get the DI version, check around and you can get it for a little under $600. The non-DI version can be had for about $500. The internal maps are just slightly betterr than useless, but you can get maps from either navionics or possibly Lakemaster (depending on where you boat) for as little as $100. Lowrance also has an Elite 5 in your general price range. Lowrance does have better internal maps. I had seriously considered the Elite 5, but ultimately I went wth the 597CI HD DI. In any case, plan on a steep learning curve on the new stuff. They are all rather complex instruments, but in the end it will be worth the effort andhopefully the cost.

i have the elite 5 dsi, its an awesome down scan, great maps, but no fish id. Hands down I am a newbie and the down scan helps ALOT! Theres no question if your on top of a struture with this unit. I would recommend this unit if you dont wanna play with sensitvity options and all the advanced stuff its pretty a pretty basic unit. Dont care for lowrance customer support though. Expect wait times ;)
