need quick water pump help

Last night discovered the water pump (on the front of the block) was leaking pretty heavily from the bottom weep hole. I was able to find a replacement water pump this morning and the family patiently waited while I installed the new pump. Put the motor on the muffs and started the motor to make sure everything was good before we left for the lake. A few seconds after the motor started I realized I have a serious problem. There is no water exiting the sides of the drives with the exhaust. It appears I have no water flowing through the system. What is wrong. No problems before the new water pump and everything is back on correctly. Any ideas? Now I hope I don't have impeller issues since there was no water flowing.

I'd change the impeller, just to be Sure..

The muffs are on and the water was running. I just don't have any water coming out with the exhaust (on the sides of the drive or through the prop). I wander if I got a "bad" new water pump. I didn't think to look down into the pump itself. They don't come with anything in place to block the passages do they? Guess I should have thought to look inside first.

Ayuh,... Even Without the circulating water pump, the Impeller pump would be pushin' water out....

You had the water pump off... The block and part of the manifolds drained.. It takes up to 20 seconds to refill the engine block and manifolds.... When you put the muffs on and turn the water on there is excess water running out of the sides of the muffs. When you start the engine that excess water should drop off significantly, indicating that the drive water pump is sucking up water.... If you see that happening you know water is on it's way....

Got to thinking earlier...pulled a couple hoses and backfilled with tap water. Put the water to the muffs and started the motor. Let it run watching the temp gauge (very closely) and after about 40-45 seconds water was discharging out both sides of the drive. Just needed to fill the block, hoses and manifolds again. Just returned from the lake and everything seems fine. Ran it with the family for a few hours with no abnormalities or temp issues. I think we're back on line. Thanks guys.

That shouldn't be necessary, and it shouldn't take that long. You have a problem, you just don't know it yet, but will probably find out when you get it out on the water under load.

Ok...so I THOUGHT the OP already stated that he took it out on the lake and ran it with no problems...

I'm thinking if there were further issues, they would have manifested themselves already..."a few hours" is a pretty good shake down cruise.
