My MTD tractor's snowblower belt system leaves much to be desired...

I would like to replace the one belt idler with a VEE idler- you see, as it is, the VEE side runs on the idler, and the flat idler rolls the darned belt onto it's back...then it has to flip again onto the drive pulley... not the best for belt life.

so I need a small V pulley (approx 4" dia) that has a small enough brg that it can mount with a 3/8" bolt. Should I be calling that a sheave?

anyone know where to find such a thing? I have looked at auto stores , snowmobile parts etc... nothing seems to be the right thing yet...

NAPA or Carquist small engine catalogs have direct replacements for that pulley and many others--Bob

I suspect that the belt is incorrectly routed. Flat idlers are intended to tension from the flat side of the belt.

Could it be that the original belt was replaced by one that didn't fit the original path?

Alos recommend Tractor Supply. They have numerous pulleys that weld to different hubs to accomadate just about anything.

I agree with JB.....the problem isn't the idler pulley, it the routing of the belt.

Flat idlers ALWAYS run against the flat side of the belt.
Someone has f'd up the routing and maybe installed the wrong (too short or long) belt.

Fix the problem, not the symptom.

Thanks guys - you have inspired me..
I have stared at this routing for what seems like an eternity trying to figure out how both idlers can run the back of the belt... I'm gonna stare some more and figure this thing out!

Take a picture and post it here, or draw a schematic.

We'll figure it out for you!

:D

Re: need small v belt pulley/bearing

Think I have put this one to bed, but I did take pics after the last belt install (belt #5!)
I still want to put a larger drive pulley. As you'll see it's too small to drive a vee belt properly. I know larger will result in more blower speed, but the trans is too fast in first gear at high idle anyway. For now, belt dressing keeps it from slipping .
I have straightened the pulley out, those bended parts are from stretching on the 5 belts. I removed one idler, and drilled the other side of the frame for the tensioner spring as you can see. There was no way i could figure out how to make the second idler ron on the back of a belt anywhere.
Look at the bend the vee belt has to take at the front of this rig! I tried running the belt on the side of it's vee around the blower drive, that doesn't work - slips...
http://www.igs.net/~fms/1.jpg
http://www.igs.net/~fms/2.jpg
http://www.igs.net/~fms/3.jpg
http://www.igs.net/~fms/4.jpg
http://www.igs.net/~fms/5.jpg
