I've got an 07' Bayliner with the 3.0 mercruiser engine. It was sitting for about 6 months. The idle is giving me a slight problem and I'm suspecting some small debris/clog in the carb. I'm mechanically inclinded but never rebuilt a carb. The boat is only 5 years old so I don't believe it would need rebuilt completely. I'm looking to get some carb cleaner and try spraying/cleaning the ports/areas that might help correct my problem. Can anyone give me some direction on the best way to do this? Should I take out any jets or needles and spray in the openings? Thanks in advance.

You have it apart, get the numbers off the carb,go to the parts store, get a kit, follow the instructions. If you are not comfortable rebuilding it find someone who is. I would not think a 5 year old carb would need it but then again I do not know the conditions it was kept in before hand. Mabe good tuneup is in order? Plugs, wires, cap rotor?

Have you changed the fuel filters lately? Including the one where the fuel line goes into the carb?

More likely that you just need to burn up the tank of gas that was sitting in it. Take it out on the water and run it, then add some new gas. If you put a whole lot of stabil or other snake oil in the gas, that'll also make it run like crap until you burn it out of there.

Funny how you mentioned about "snake oil". I put some seafoam in the old gas when I bought the boat. I haven't even checked the fuel filter yet. The dist. cap was pretty bad; I cleaned it up until my new one comes in the mail. How often should the wires be changed?
